My Article

Here is the political article I wrote in the Joyful Girl Magazine about “How Should We Respond”.  It was written right after the General Election.  Please feel free to comment, critic, agree, disagree.  I’d like to know your opinion on how we should respond to the government!

How Should We Respond?

Written by Betsy

I was asked the other day, “How should we respond to the government, whether we agree with them or not?” This has been an issue for many Americans over the years, and there is an answer. Romans 13:1-2 states, “Everyone must submit themselves to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.” This is God’s answer; to submit. That is how we should respond to the government. God also commands us to pray for them as 1 Timothy 2:1-3 affirms, “I urge then, first of all, that requests prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for everyone, for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good and pleases God our savior.” (NIV) Whether you are happy or displeased with the results of this past election, you must understand that God has a purpose for everything and is under control. Our proper response to the government and our newly-elected leaders, therefore, should be to pray for them. We should pray that they would have the strength and courage to do what is right, without being influenced by opinion polls or peer pressure.Since our government reflects the American people, we should pray that our leaders would uphold our convictions and beliefs. Praying that marriage and the virtues and morals that the founding fathers defended would be preserved, praying that our leaders would make honorable decisions, and praying that God would do His perfect will in America are ways that we can be actively involved in supporting our government.

When I talk about submitting, I am not implying that you go against God’s commands in order to submit to the government. From stories such as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Daniel 3), we understand that we must obey the government as long as it doesn’t go against what God commands. Obeying God comes first.

In conclusion, we should acknowledge our new authority, support them through prayer, and submit to those that God has placed in authority over our nation.

Here are some of the many issues that you could pray about:

Pray that ‘In God We Trust’ will stay on our money currency (is on trial in the Supreme Court right now).

Right now, that the current guidelines for small businesses are making it very difficult to start and run one, so please pray that the guidelines would be changed to make it more feasible and affordable for the owners and that they wouldn’t be discouraged to create business here on the Key Peninsula, in Washington State. It is hurting our economy.

As years pass, that life will be upheld, and the morals of this nation that were founded on Christianity will be rekindled and not thrown away.

You can also pray that America will uphold marriage between one man and one woman, and that it will not be changed, and will stay as the standard for marriage in the U.S.
